Anafiotika is a small neighbourhood, just outside of the Acropolis and right next to the historical neighbourhood of Plaka. It was built in the 19th century, when many construction workers from the Cycladic islands came to Athens. They brought along this unique architecture, making Anafiotika a kind of island refuge inside the big city. Though most of the original constructions were destroyed in the 1950s, Anafiotika is still a great place to stroll around. Be prepared to cross ways with many, many, many cats!
