During the French Revolution, the Church lost much of its power in France. Their lands were taken, and some of the clergy went into exile. The Concordat of 1801 was signed between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII, strenghtening the role of the Roman Catholic Church as the majority church in France, while still keeping much of the power in Napoleon's hands.
