In 1844, after the enormous success of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, the government of King Louis Philippe I decided to restore the Cathedral and build a new sacristy. Two architects were chosen for this endeavor: Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and Jean-Baptiste Lassus. Viollet-le-Duc is the most remembered, probably because he finished the restauration alone after the death of Lassus in 1857.
