Between 1801 and 1805, Thomas Bruce — aka Lord Elgin — worked in Athens as a diplomat. He removed a number of important statues and artefacts from the Acropolis (like one of the Erechtheion's Caryatids) and displaced them to England, where they are to this present day, on the British Museum's Greece and Rome Collection.
